The state Health Department is again reminding all of us to take steps to prevent the very dangerous diseases spread by mosquitoes and ticks.
Central New York is a friendly environment for Eastern Equine Encephalitis, or Triple E, which is carried by mosquitoes. West Nile virus is also carried by mosquitoes, and both have been deadly here. Three people in Central New York have died from Triple E between 2009 and 2011, and a Syracuse man died from West Nile last summer. Lyme disease can be contracted via deer ticks.
The state advises us to wear light colored clothes with long sleeves and long pants, use a good quality repellent and check for ticks. Some other tips worth noting:
